Given by Abe on June 17, 1858, in Springfield, Illinois.

He gave it upon accepting the Illinois Republican Party's nomination as that state's United States senator (at the close of the Republican State Convention).

Lincoln caught the mood of many in the North who were increasingly concerned about the morality of slavery on the one hand, and the need to preserve the Union on the other.



The speech created a lasting image of the danger of disunion because of slavery, and it rallied Republicans across the North.
