The saying, "A house divide against itself cannot stand" was said first by jesus in regard to calling his miracles "from the devil." He meant, if the devil is bettering the world, he is undermining himself.

Lincoln repeated it, in regard to the divided country, which he was determined to UNITE.

However, others simply wanted him to shut up and leave them alone.
In my opinion, this means that any group, whether it is a club, a family, a battalion, anything where there are people that have to work together to make the unit/group work -- even if members of the group have somewhat differing opinions on things, they have to stand together as a unit for the group to be able to perform its function.



For instance, if a battalion has to make an invasion or a siege, they have to work as a unit to take whatever stronghold they're trying to take. If a small group of the battalion didn't agree with the point of the commander and wanted to just "do their own thing" or sit on their bums and have a cup of tea, the entire unit could fall because of the division in ranks.



The word of "house" is in that statement, which is also good for looking at someone's own family life. For a family unit to work well (since no family is perfect) all of the members of that family have to have some common ground and stand together in the important things while still giving individual members the freedom that they may need at times. When all members of the family unit share some common ground, they will stand together as one when the bad times hit or when something tragic happens.



In regards to if love or hate stand against themselves. I've seen instances when love and hate, both, can actually unite a group -- ANY group. There are also instances when love will spawn hate, and hate will spawn love which will divide a group. Several members of a family may suddenly love a style of music to the point where other members of the family develop a hatred of the music so much that they will actually argue endlessly with those who love the music to the point where the family unit will become weakened. Philosophically, one could look at both sides here as having love, while both have hate at the same time. If the music loving side doesn't show respect for the music hating side and the two can't come to a feasible compromise, the entire minor situation can be blown into a huge weakening of that entire unit.



True, this music scenario is a very minor thing, but I think that you can see the point I'm trying to make. Sorry if it seems like I'm rambling a bit there. :)

Basically Jesus was saying that if Satan was the one responsible for casting out demons as the Pharisees suggested, then the house would not stand. Satan and his demons need to stay united. You could liken it to the 20,000+ Christian denominations of today, they are all divided on doctrine, so how will they stand?
Abraham Lincoln used this to discuss the need to end slavery..a free nation divided on freedom is not free...and the conflict that it caused to try to maintain is was destroying us anyway...sooo...

it was his decision then there there would be no firther compromise...



now admittedly we were already at war ..and the emancipation proclamation only freed people in the states that were not in insurrection ...but it was a a way of uniting thought and getting people behind what was arguably the most destructive time in American history
